Teachers Should be Better Qualified

[11.02.10]

The Commons education select committee has criticised the entry requirements for teachers training in England for being too low.  It has been argued that graduates applying for PGCE courses should have at least a lower second at degree level and that teaching needs to become established as a Masters-level profession.

The report also calls for teachers in England to have a licence to practice, which must be renewed on a regular basis to "weed out poor performers" from the profession.  MPs want to see a "chartered teacher status" framework to link professional development, qualifications, pay and the licence to practice.
