ICT in schools in England 2003

The DfES survey (SFR19/2002: Survey of ICT in Schools) shows that whilst the provision of ICT resources continues to increase, many teachers of RE seem slow to take advantage of them.
(Analysis of the statistics of users of the RE site indicate that there is an increase in the number of users with a core making heavily increased use of the facilities the site offers.)

Curriculum and Staffing:

In September 2003, the DfES published its Secondary Schools Staffing and Curriculum survey (SFR 25/2003); it showed:

Curriculum provision of RE
  1. % of pupils in year groups 7-11 studying RE
    Year 1996 2002
    7 89 86
    8 90 89
    9 89 90
    10 66 77
    11 59 74

  2. % of schools offering RE as a named subject
    Year 1996 2002
    7 88 88
    8 90 91
    9 89 91
    10 85 89
    11 82 90

  3. % of pupils studying RE in schools offering the subject
    Year 1996 2002
    7 100 99
    8 100 99
    9 99 99
    10 78 86
    11 72 82

  4. average no. of standardised periods studied by pupils in RE
    Year 1996 2002
    7-11 2 2

However, data on Teachers and RE had some surprising results - particularly with reference to the post AL qualifications of teachers teaching RE:

  5. FT teacher age
(by subject of highest post AL qualification)

    RE 1996 2002
    Under 30 17 26
    30 - 39 24 21
    40 - 49 40 27
    Over 50 20 26

  6. Highest post AL qualification held by FT teachers in the subject they teach to years 7 - 13
    RE 1996 2002
    Degree 19 22
    B.Ed. 10 8
    PGCE 7 7
    Cert. Ed. 9 4
    Other 1 3
    No qualification 55 58

  7. Proportion of subject periods taught to year groups 7 - 13 by FT teachers holding post AL qualification in that subject

    RE 1996 2002
    Degree 35 43
    B.Ed. 17 12
