Science and Religion in Schools. New Publications.

The first major initiative of its kind anywhere in the world, the Oxford-based Science and Religion in Schools Project aims to encourage young people from the age of seven to nineteen to start thinking about some of the important issues they will encounter throughout their lifetimes.

The materials produced by the Project may now be ordered from the website (www.srsp.net). They are designed to help students, in primary as well as secondary schools, discuss and understand the differing claims of science and of religions.

Teachers of religious education and science in more than 50 schools throughout the UK have trialled the materials, which consist of detailed guides for primary and secondary schools, each with a CD-ROM containing a 'pick and mix' range of background information for teachers, lesson plans and classroom resources (including text, images, and audio-visual materials).

Teachers of science and RE have produced materials on topics as diverse as evolution, creation and ecology, medical ethics and biotechnology, cosmology and spirituality. These were scrutinised by academic specialists before being tested in schools. Teachers in a variety of schools who trialled the materials - for primary ages, 11-16s and 16-18s - said they stimulated and motivated pupils and prompted enthusiastic classroom discussion.

All the teaching materials are contained in a package consisting of a primary or secondary guide together with a CD-ROM which schools can buy for only £12.50 (plus p&p) for the primary materials or £15 (plus p&p) for secondary.

For more details about the project and to see some samples of the materials see the Science and Religion in Schools website www.srsp.net.
